Educational Review Office

Purpose of the review

An ERO review supports a school to strengthen its capacity to promote students’ learning and achievement. The review process also aims to sustain ongoing development and improvement through effective self review. ERO is a government department providing independent external evaluation of schools and early childhood services. Through its reviews ERO is able to provide assurance to the Government, parents and communities about the quality of schools and early childhood services and the effective use of public funds. Children and young people are central to ERO’s approach. This is reflected in ERO’s whakataukī and is the foundation for ERO’s vision and mission statement.

Accountability and improvement

ERO’s evaluation in schools has two purposes – accountability and educational improvement. Evaluation for accountability purposes involves reporting on goals and standards (including checking on compliance matters), while an improvement focus involves assisting schools to develop and improve through their self review. ERO’s approach is to work with schools to identify both their strengths and areas for development and review.
