Integrated Concept Based Curriculum

The New Zealand Curriculum sets the direction for student learning and provides schools with guidance to design their own teaching and learning programme for their children in ways that will stimulate curiosity and require them to search for relevant information and ideas.

Waimauku School maps broad concepts and big ideas for teaching and learning over two years, providing a balance across the learning areas.  Our concepts are currently under review to ensure we support students to develop a positive view on ways they can participate in making a difference to the world around them.  Term 1 2012 begins with the concept of Citizenship, a concept to reflect our key values of Respect and Responsibility as good citizens. We are encouraging our students to, by their actions, show how they care for one another, their community, their environment, their country, their world, as appropriate to their respective year levels. We are encouraging our students to be proud of who they are and what they do.

Authentic links are made to integrate curriculum areas, e.g. Science, English, Technology, Social Sciences, Maori, Visual Art and Health. Different contexts for learning are chosen at each year level depending on teacher knowledge of student interest, learning needs and to promote the development of skills and competencies as children progress throughout Waimauku School.

Our well resourced school library supports our planned concepts with exciting and innovative displays and extensive resources for Waimauku students to use. They are systematically taught the skills needed to enrich their learning by using the library effectively.
